Appropriation and Its Consequences: Archaeology under Colonial Rule in Egypt and India

Abstract The beginnings of archaeology in Egypt and India are the subject this paper. In both countries, antiquities were carried away by powerful. Moreover, hubris colonial powers ruling countries made it inevitable that not only antiquities, but knowledge about past, appropriated different ways. For modern Egyptians, Pharaonic past was remote culture distant time. people themselves until fairly recently prevented from learning writing, once deciphered, various ways means. contrast, administration relied on Indian scholars to teach British personnel ancient languages, texts, religion. neither country history period taught schools foreign rulers had left. But became involved identity framing nation as Hindu, thereby acquired an ugly twist. Self-identification earlier twentieth century, other hand, possibly more with Arab world than pyramid builders.
